How Did You Get Into Electronic Dance Music?

Electronic Dance Music or, EDM is clearly something that is near and dear to you if you are visiting this website. However, you didn’t just have an epiphany and start loving EDM one day, so what is it that made you realize how special EDM is to you? Here’s how I came to love Electronic Dance Music.

As a typical teenager I payed no attention to the type of music I let invade my ears. I simply roamed with the droves of aimless zombies that listened and liked things like Soulja Boy, Britney Spears, & Nelly. In fact, even in my late teens I may or may not have randomly knocked on a door in a university dorm and “Cranked That” for the unsuspecting victims on the other side of the door. Thankfully there’s no footage to be found of this event and I can move on with my life knowing no one will ever be able to see the embarrassing act I took part in. Towards the end of high school I found myself enjoying more uptempo music. This in my opinion, was my first step towards EDM.

I began enjoying the more poppy side of music with things like “Sexy Back” by Justin Timberlake and “Beautiful” by Akon. For some reason I really enjoyed the more uptempo style and I began to tire of Hip Hop and slowly realized how cookie cutter it had become. I felt like every song had the same basic theme. Drugs, Money, & Women. That’s all fine for a few songs but when it becomes the epicenter of your lyrical prowess, it begins to get tiring.

Flo Rida & Pitbull began to break out onto the scene shortly after and I absolutely loved them. I adored almost every song they put out and without realizing it, I was being influenced by EDM. What I did not realize was that many of Flo Rida & Pitbull’s tracks were remakes of classic electronic songs. Soon my big ears were giving a chance to Benny Benassi, Calvin Harris, & Tiesto.

Today, EDM is my favorite type of music. While I may be caught humming “Call Me Maybe” at times, EDM is where my heart is.
